The passengers and crew of the Viking
Starship were treated to an amazing two days of non-stop
humpback activity on our offshore whale watch trip.
This year we headed to Stellwagen Bank and found
our first humpbacks at daybreak on Monday. The day was
intermittently stormy and the humpbacks were breaching
repeatedly through our 10 hours of observations. We
were able to get close to and photograph 44 humpbacks on
Monday 8/15.
CRESLI/Viking Fleet 2011 Offshore trip: Day 1
August 16, 2011: cooperative bubble feeding!
We didn’t think that anything could top
our first day – but we were wrong. At daybreak on day two
(8/16) we encountered our first of 36 humpbacks that were
bubble feeding in large groups all around us and as far as
one could see. Massive open-mouth surface feeding displays
were seen throughout our time with the whales on Tuesday,
and they were joined by thousands of pelagic birds and
hundreds of Atlantic white-side dolphins. UTTERLY AMAZING!
